Who is Marvin the Martian?
Chuck Jones built Marvin on a single inversion: he intends to destroy the Earth, and he says so in the mildest voice in the studio's history. Mel Blanc plays him quietly, politely, mostly disappointed, and the comedy comes entirely from the gap between the manner and the plan. The helmet is a Roman one — Jones drew it from depictions of the god Mars, brush crest and all — and the face beneath it is simply absent, two eyes on black, which is one of the boldest design choices in the Looney Tunes canon and the reason the character prints so well. He went unnamed for decades; the model sheets called him Commander X-2, and the name Marvin only came into general use in the 1970s once merchandising needed something to put on a box.
