Western storytelling has used foxes as liars for as long as there have been fables — Aesop, Reynard, the Uncle Remus stories — and Zootopia puts that expectation on the screen deliberately, introduces a fox who is in fact a small-time hustler, and then explains why: he learned as a child that the city had already decided what he was, and found it easier to agree. Jason Bateman's voice does most of the work, playing every line about half a beat slower than it needs to be. Visually he is built entirely from horizontals — half-closed eyes, a flat mouth, sloping shoulders, a loosened tie — against the rabbit's verticals, which is why the two of them read as a pair in silhouette before either speaks.
