Who is Kuromi?

Kuromi is Sanrio's most successful recent creation and she works by breaking the house rules. Everything else in the catalogue is soft, pastel and unthreatening; she is black and pink, wears a jester hood with a skull on it, has a visible tail, and is explicitly written as My Melody's rival. That gives the roster something it had been missing entirely — a character a teenager can wear without it reading as childish — and the commercial results have been remarkable, with a surge in popularity through the 2020s that has repeatedly put her near the top of Sanrio's own annual character rankings, ahead of much older properties. The design is also unusually well judged: the skull is a rounded, harmless shape, so she reads as mischievous rather than actually dark, which keeps her inside the brand while looking like she is outside it.

Why Kuromi endures

The most successful character Sanrio has introduced in decades, and a well-judged piece of brand extension that reaches an older audience without leaving the house style.

What Kuromi looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A white rabbit-like figure in a black jester hood with a pink skull

Black and pink is the whole proposition and it is the only combination in the Sanrio line that works on a black garment, which is precisely why she sells to an older audience than the rest of the roster. The skull-on-hood mark is self-contained.
