Who is Bluey?

Bluey is a six-year-old Blue Heeler and the centre of the most critically respected preschool programme in decades, for reasons that have little to do with children's television convention. Joe Brumm built the show around unstructured play — most episodes are simply a game, invented by the children and joined by the parents — and the writing treats the adults as full characters with their own fatigue, boredom and disappointments. Episodes run seven minutes and are frequently more emotionally precise than programming aimed at adults; several have prompted widespread discussion among parents rather than children. The show is Australian and does not neutralise it: the vocabulary, the setting and the humour are specific, which is unusual in a category that normally sands off anything regional before export.
