Who is Marshall?
Marshall is the Dalmatian firefighter and the show's comic relief, and the two functions are doing more work together than they appear to. He is clumsy — he arrives by falling over, roughly every episode — and the format is careful that his clumsiness never causes the failure. He is competent when it counts and embarrassing on the way in, which for a preschool audience models something quite specific: you can be the one who trips and still be the one who fixes it. That is a more useful message than it sounds, and it is the reason he consistently rivals Chase in popularity despite having no leadership role. The Dalmatian-as-fire-dog association he trades on is real, dating to the era when the breed ran alongside horse-drawn fire engines.

The most popular non-lead character in the dominant preschool property of its era, and a well-judged piece of preschool writing about competence surviving embarrassment.
What Marshall looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Red firefighter uniform and helmet, white coat with black spots
Red is his colour in the team's coding system, and the black-spotted white coat is a pattern rather than a logo — which gives him the most texture of any pup and makes spotted all-over prints a natural treatment.
Red is his team colour, and the black-spotted coat is a genuine pattern rather than a logo — the only pup with real texture, which makes spotted all-over prints a natural fit. Toddler and kids' sizing.
