4th birthday shirts
The crossover year, and the most common sizing mistake on this site.
Characters for this age What size to buy
Four is the age where American sizing runs two systems at once, and they do not agree. A 4T and a youth XS both claim to fit a four-year-old, and they are cut differently: the 4T is wider through the hip and shorter in the body, because it is still a toddler pattern, while the XS is slimmer and longer because it is the bottom of the youth range. Ordering the wrong one is the single most common sizing error in children’s licensed apparel.
The character range widens sharply here too. Four is roughly when feature animation becomes as legible to a child as preschool television, which means the catalogue available to you roughly doubles between the third birthday and the fourth.
What size to buy at 4
| US size | 4T or youth XS (4/5) |
|---|---|
| Garment chest | roughly 22–23 in |
| Sizing system | Kids — XS (4/5), S (6/7) |
Sizes vary between licensees. Where a listing publishes its own measurements, those are the ones to trust. Our full US size guide covers toddler 2T through adult 3XL.
What matters at 4
- 4T is wider and shorter; youth XS is slimmer and longer. For a tall, slim four-year-old choose XS; for a stocky one still in nappies at night, 4T.
- Measure a shirt that already fits rather than trusting the label. Lay it flat, measure armpit to armpit, double it, and compare against the listing.
- Feature animation becomes recognisable around this age, which is why the range of characters worth considering expands so much at four.
- Girls’ and boys’ cuts start to diverge in licensed ranges here. The girls’ version is usually shorter in the body at the same nominal size.

Common questions
What size shirt does a 4-year-old wear?
4T or youth XS (4/5), with a garment chest of roughly 22–23 in. US children's sizes are labelled by age rather than measurement, so where build and age disagree, measure a shirt that already fits and compare it against the listing.
Should a fourth birthday shirt have the age printed on it?
Generally not, if you want it worn again. A printed number makes the shirt wrong from the following morning, and by school age most children notice.
How far ahead should you order?
At least a week, and longer if a specific size is essential. Licensed children’s apparel goes out of stock by individual size rather than by product, and the common sizes are the ones that go first.
