Kids character T-shirts
4–7 years · US sizes XS (4/5), S (6/7)
This is where American sizing switches from the toddler T system to youth letters, and the two overlap confusingly for about a year. Youth XS is usually labelled 4/5 and youth S is 6/7 — those numbers are ages, not chest measurements, which is the single most common misreading in the whole size system.
What to watch for in this band
- Youth XS and 4T are the same age and different cuts. XS is slimmer and longer; 4T is wider and shorter.
- This is the age children start choosing their own shirts, so character preference stops being the parent’s decision and starts being negotiable.
- Brand variation begins to widen here. Two youth smalls from different licensees can differ by a full inch across the chest.
- Check whether a listing is boys’ or girls’ cut — at this age many licensed ranges split, and the girls’ version is often shorter in the body.
The widest choice of licensed characters exists in this band. Almost everything is made in 4/5 and 6/7, so this is the easiest age to buy for and the hardest to narrow down.
