Who is Chewbacca?
Chewbacca is a character with no intelligible dialogue who nonetheless reads as fully articulate, which is a considerable achievement of performance and sound design working together. Peter Mayhew, cast largely for his height, built the physicality; Ben Burtt constructed the voice from recordings of bears, walruses, badgers and a camel, blended so the emotional register is always legible even though the words are not. George Lucas has said the character came from his own dog, an Alaskan Malamute called Indiana who rode in the passenger seat of his car — which is also where the name Indiana Jones came from. The Wookiee is the emotional register of the original trilogy: the crew's reactions to danger are frequently communicated through him rather than stated.
