Chewbacca
Chewbacca is a character with no intelligible dialogue who nonetheless reads as fully articulate, which is a considerable achievement of performance and sound design working together. Peter Mayhew, cast largely for his height, built the physicality; Ben Burtt constructed the voice from recordings of bears, walruses, badgers and a camel, blended so the emotional register is always legible even though the words are not.

Who is Chewbacca?
Chewbacca is a character with no intelligible dialogue who nonetheless reads as fully articulate, which is a considerable achievement of performance and sound design working together. Peter Mayhew, cast largely for his height, built the physicality; Ben Burtt constructed the voice from recordings of bears, walruses, badgers and a camel, blended so the emotional register is always legible even though the words are not. George Lucas has said the character came from his own dog, an Alaskan Malamute called Indiana who rode in the passenger seat of his car — which is also where the name Indiana Jones came from. The Wookiee is the emotional register of the original trilogy: the crew's reactions to danger are frequently communicated through him rather than stated.

Why Chewbacca endures
The benchmark for a non-speaking character carrying full emotional communication, and an early demonstration that sound design could substitute for dialogue entirely.
What Chewbacca looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Brown fur, the bandolier strap, and the bowcaster
The diagonal bandolier across a mass of brown fur is the identifying shape, and it works surprisingly well as minimal line art. Brown-on-brown designs are common and suit tan and heather-brown garments rather than the usual black.
The bandolier is the key identifying element and works as simple line art. This is one of the few characters in the category better suited to brown, tan and heather garments than to black. Often paired with Han Solo in buddy-style designs.
