Doctor Who

The Doctor

The Doctor is defined by a production accident that became the best idea in British television. When William Hartnell's health made continuing impossible in 1966, the programme explained his replacement in-story as the character physically regenerating into a new body with a new personality — and in doing so made the lead role permanently recastable, which is why the series has outlived every other science-fiction programme by decades.

Who is The Doctor?

The Doctor is defined by a production accident that became the best idea in British television. When William Hartnell's health made continuing impossible in 1966, the programme explained his replacement in-story as the character physically regenerating into a new body with a new personality — and in doing so made the lead role permanently recastable, which is why the series has outlived every other science-fiction programme by decades. The character has since been played by more than a dozen actors of varying ages, temperaments and, since 2018, genders. What remains constant is the refusal: the Doctor carries no weapon, resolves conflicts by talking, and treats cruelty as the only real sin. The screwdriver, the police box and the scarf are all essentially accidents of low-budget 1960s and 1970s production that became iconography.

The Doctor: the details

First appearance
Doctor Who, 23 November 1963, the day after the assassination of John F. Kennedy
Created by
Devised at the BBC by Sydney Newman and others; Verity Lambert produced, the BBC's first female drama producer
Regeneration was an accident
Invented in 1966 to replace an ailing William Hartnell, and became the device that made the series indefinitely renewable
Originally educational
Commissioned as a family programme intended to teach history and science
The TARDIS is stuck
Its shape-changing circuit failed in 1963, which is why it has remained a 1960s police box ever since
No weapon
Resolves conflicts by argument; the sonic screwdriver is explicitly not a weapon
Longest-running
By a wide margin the longest-running science-fiction television series ever made

Why The Doctor endures

The longest-running science-fiction series in television history, sustained by a recasting device invented out of necessity that has since been imitated across the medium. The TARDIS is one of the most recognisable objects in British popular culture.

What The Doctor looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The blue police box, the sonic screwdriver, and the long striped scarf

The TARDIS is the graphic — a blue police box is one of the most recognisable object silhouettes in British culture and needs no character. The fourth Doctor's multicoloured scarf is a second, entirely independent identifying mark.

The police box is the dominant graphic and works with no character at all — a blue rectangle with a lamp on top is enough. The fourth Doctor's scarf is a separate identifying mark and translates into striped designs. Strong on navy and black.
