Who is The Weeping Angels?
The Weeping Angels came out of a budget constraint and are probably the best monster the revived series has produced. Blink was a cheap episode — the lead actors barely appear — and Steven Moffat needed a threat that cost almost nothing to film. His solution was a creature that cannot move while it is being observed, which means it is played by actors standing perfectly still, and the horror is generated entirely by editing between two static shots. No effects, no prosthetics beyond make-up, no movement to animate. The rule is simple enough for a child to grasp and immediately makes every stone statue in the world slightly threatening, which is the mark of a genuinely good monster. The episode is routinely voted the best of the modern series.
