Who is The Daleks?

The Daleks saved Doctor Who. The programme's own creator had explicitly forbidden bug-eyed monsters, and the second serial was commissioned largely because nothing else was ready; it became a national phenomenon within weeks and the resulting merchandise boom is what kept the series on air. Terry Nation wrote them as an explicit fascism allegory — he had grown up during the war, and the Daleks are a race that has purged everything except hatred of difference. Raymond Cusick's design solved a practical problem brilliantly: an operator sits inside, so the skirt shape exists to hide a human being, and the gliding movement follows from that. The perennial joke about stairs was addressed on screen in 1988, which the production treated as a genuine event.

Why The Daleks endures

The antagonist that rescued the longest-running science-fiction series in television history, and one of the very few designs on this site that resembles nothing else ever made.

What The Daleks looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A ribbed conical casing with hemispheres, an eyestalk, a plunger and a gun

One of the most distinctive silhouettes ever put on television — nothing else looks remotely like it, and it reads in pure outline at any size. The hemisphere grid gives it texture that rewards detailed print as well.

A silhouette unlike anything else on television — reads in pure outline at any size, and the hemisphere grid rewards detailed print. Gold, black and red. Strong across all size bands.
