Who is Pac-Man?
Toru Iwatani set out to design an arcade game that women would want to play, at a point when the arcade was almost entirely shooting games marketed to young men, and reasoned his way to eating as a central mechanic. The shape came, by his account, from a pizza with a slice removed — though he has also said the story is partly convenient, and that the form was refined from the Japanese character for mouth. The original title was Puck Man; it was changed for the American release because of the obvious risk of the P being altered on a cabinet. Pac-Man was the highest-grossing arcade game of its era and remains the most recognisable video game character in the world by most survey measures, largely because the design is four pixels' worth of idea: a yellow circle with a wedge cut out.
