Who is Ms. Pac-Man?
Ms. Pac-Man began as an unauthorised modification. A group of MIT students trading as General Computer Corporation had been making enhancement kits that altered existing arcade cabinets, which the manufacturers regarded as piracy; after a legal fight with Atari they ended up working with Midway instead, and the Pac-Man conversion they had built as Crazy Otto was licensed and rebranded. It went on to outsell the original in North America and is frequently cited as the best-selling arcade game ever made there. The design changes were substantial rather than cosmetic — four mazes instead of one, and ghosts whose movement includes genuine randomness, which removed the memorised patterns that expert players had used to play the original indefinitely. Ownership of the character was disputed in court for decades afterwards.

One of the earliest and most commercially successful female protagonists in games, and an unusual case of an unauthorised modification being licensed and outselling the original.
What Ms. Pac-Man looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: A yellow circle with a wedge mouth, a red bow and a beauty spot
A yellow circle with a bow is about as reducible as design gets, and the maze-and-ghost imagery works entirely without the character. Eight-bit and arcade-cabinet treatments are historically grounded here rather than merely retro-styled.
A yellow circle with a bow — maximally reducible. Maze and ghost imagery works with no character at all. Eight-bit and arcade-cabinet treatments are historically grounded rather than merely retro.
