The Flash

The Flash matters to comics history out of all proportion to his profile outside them, because his 1956 relaunch is the event that started the Silver Age. DC had largely abandoned superheroes after the war; reintroducing the Flash as a new character with the same name — police scientist Barry Allen replacing golden-age Jay Garrick — worked well enough to trigger the revival of the entire genre.

Who is The Flash?

The Flash matters to comics history out of all proportion to his profile outside them, because his 1956 relaunch is the event that started the Silver Age. DC had largely abandoned superheroes after the war; reintroducing the Flash as a new character with the same name — police scientist Barry Allen replacing golden-age Jay Garrick — worked well enough to trigger the revival of the entire genre. It also produced the multiverse. The 1961 story in which Barry meets Jay established that both existed on parallel Earths, an idea that has since spread far beyond comics and now underpins a substantial share of mainstream blockbuster storytelling. The Flash is therefore the character responsible for two of the structural ideas modern superhero fiction runs on: the legacy hero, where the mantle passes between people, and the shared multiverse.

Why The Flash endures

The character whose 1956 reintroduction restarted the superhero genre after its post-war collapse, and whose 1961 crossover invented the multiverse. Both are load-bearing ideas for everything the genre has done since.

What The Flash looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A gold lightning bolt inside a white circle, on red

One of the cleanest emblems in comics — three colours, one shape, no fine detail. It survives shrinking to a chest-pocket print better than almost any other superhero mark, which is why it appears so often on kids' sizes.

The bolt-in-circle badge is the dominant treatment and one of the few that works well small. Red is the natural garment colour but the emblem also reads strongly on white and navy. Very common in toddler and kids' sizing.
