Who is Superman?

Superman is the character that invented the category. Before Action Comics #1 in 1938 there were strongmen, masked avengers and pulp adventurers; afterwards there were superheroes, and the costume-plus-secret-identity-plus-powers formula was fixed within a year. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two teenagers from Cleveland, built him out of science fiction, circus strongman posters and the immigrant experience — an infant sent away from a dying world, raised in Kansas, passing as ordinary. The tension that keeps him interesting is not whether he can win a fight. It is the question of restraint: what an effectively unlimited being owes to people who cannot stop him. Later writers have pushed hard on that, but the character resists cynicism, and attempts to darken him tend to be corrected within a few years. He remains the moral baseline other DC characters are measured against.

Superman: the details

First appearance
Action Comics #1, cover-dated June 1938
Created by
Writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, who sold the rights for $130 — a decision that produced decades of litigation and eventually a restored credit line
In-universe symbol
Since the 1978 film the S has been retconned as a Kryptonian glyph, usually the house crest of the family of El, rather than a letter
Flight came later
He originally leapt rather than flew — the 'tall buildings in a single bound' line is literal. Flight was introduced through the 1940s radio and animated shorts
Home city
Metropolis
Weakness
Kryptonite, introduced on the 1943 radio serial rather than in the comics
Screen benchmark
Superman (1978), whose tagline promised audiences they would believe a man could fly

Why Superman endures

Every superhero convention — the cape, the chest emblem, the secret identity, the newspaper day job, the colour-saturated costume — was either invented for Superman or codified by him within five years. He is also the test case for character copyright in American law, and the reason creator-credit disputes are a permanent feature of the comics industry.

What Superman looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The stylised red-and-yellow S inside a pentagonal shield

The shield is the most recognised superhero mark in the world and the reason the primary-colour blue/red/yellow combination reads as 'superhero' at all. The shape has been redrawn dozens of times; the 1978 film version is the one most shirts use.

The shield is used almost universally on its own, and it is one of the few emblems that genuinely requires colour — a monochrome S-shield loses its legibility. Shirts often print it oversized and centred, or distressed on heather grey to suggest a vintage tee.
