Catwoman

Catwoman has spent eighty years being the character DC cannot decide about, and that indecision is precisely what has kept her interesting. She debuted in the same 1940 issue as the Joker, as a jewel thief called simply the Cat, and has occupied every position on the moral spectrum since — straightforward villain, reluctant ally, romantic foil, outright lead with her own long-running title.

Who is Catwoman?

Catwoman has spent eighty years being the character DC cannot decide about, and that indecision is precisely what has kept her interesting. She debuted in the same 1940 issue as the Joker, as a jewel thief called simply the Cat, and has occupied every position on the moral spectrum since — straightforward villain, reluctant ally, romantic foil, outright lead with her own long-running title. Unlike most Batman antagonists she is not defined by pathology; she steals because she is good at it and because the alternative was worse, which makes her the rare Gotham character who reads as an adult making choices. The relationship with Batman works for the same reason the Joker's does: she is a structural counterpart rather than an opposite, someone with the same skills and a completely different conclusion about what to do with them.

Comics Code gap
Largely absent from comics between 1954 and 1966, a casualty of Comics Code restrictions on morally ambiguous characters
Costume palette shift
The suit moved from green and purple to the black leather most readers now picture, largely through the 1980s and the 1992 film
Own title
Has headlined multiple ongoing series since 1993, unusual for a character introduced as a supporting antagonist
Most-cited version
Michelle Pfeiffer's 1992 performance is the one most frequently referenced in later designs

Why Catwoman endures

One of the earliest morally ambiguous characters in superhero comics and among the first to survive the Comics Code era intact. Eartha Kitt's 1967 casting also made her one of the first Black actresses to play a major comic-book role on American television.

What Catwoman looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Cat-ear cowl, goggles, whip and clawed gloves

Catwoman has no chest emblem, which makes her apparel unusual in this category — shirts rely on silhouette, the ear-and-goggle profile, or a stylised cat mark rather than a badge.

No emblem means shirts work harder here — expect silhouettes, profile illustrations and stylised cat marks rather than badges. Predominantly black garments; women's cut is the norm.
