Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy started as a femme fatale with a plant gimmick and has been steadily rewritten into something considerably more coherent: an environmental extremist who regards human beings as the problem and plant life as the constituency she represents. That reframing, largely a product of the 1990s onward, gave her a motive that does not depend on seduction and made her one of the few Batman antagonists whose position is arguable.

Who is Poison Ivy?

Poison Ivy started as a femme fatale with a plant gimmick and has been steadily rewritten into something considerably more coherent: an environmental extremist who regards human beings as the problem and plant life as the constituency she represents. That reframing, largely a product of the 1990s onward, gave her a motive that does not depend on seduction and made her one of the few Batman antagonists whose position is arguable. She is also central to one of the more significant relationship arcs in mainstream comics — her long partnership with Harley Quinn, which moved from subtext to text over roughly two decades and is now a fixture of both characters. On the page she is drawn as much like a botanical illustration as a person, all vines and green skin tones, which gives her apparel a very different look from the rest of Gotham's roster.

Why Poison Ivy endures

One of the earliest supervillains built around environmental politics rather than personal gain, decades before that became a common motive. Her relationship with Harley Quinn is also among the most prominent queer partnerships in mainstream superhero publishing.

What Poison Ivy looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: Red hair against green skin, ivy leaves and coiling vines

Ivy is one of the few characters in this category whose look is essentially a pattern rather than a logo, which makes her unusually well suited to all-over prints, botanical line art and single-colour leaf motifs.

Pattern rather than badge. Botanical line art, ivy borders and green-on-black leaf motifs dominate, and all-over prints work better here than on almost any other DC character. Women's cut is the norm.
