Who is Michelangelo?
Michelangelo is the youngest brother and the one the 1987 cartoon leaned on hardest, because he is the only member of the group whose personality is straightforwardly fun. That version — surfer slang, pizza obsession, orange bandana — is what carried the property into a toy line that sold in the hundreds of millions and made these four characters unavoidable in the late 1980s. It is also a considerable softening: in the original black-and-white comic all four turtles are essentially interchangeable, and the distinct personalities were developed largely for the cartoon and its merchandising. His weapon is a pair of nunchaku, which caused a genuine problem in Britain, where the weapon was restricted on television and the character was given a grappling hook instead — and the whole franchise was retitled Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles to avoid the word ninja.
