Star Wars
R2-D2
R2-D2 has no face, no dialogue and no articulated limbs to speak of, and is nonetheless the most consistently legible emotional performer in the original trilogy — which is a considerable feat of sound design and puppeteering. Ben Burtt built the voice by processing his own vocalisations through an analogue synthesiser, working to convey emotion rather than language, and the result is that audiences reliably understand a character saying nothing intelligible.

Who is R2-D2?
R2-D2 has no face, no dialogue and no articulated limbs to speak of, and is nonetheless the most consistently legible emotional performer in the original trilogy — which is a considerable feat of sound design and puppeteering. Ben Burtt built the voice by processing his own vocalisations through an analogue synthesiser, working to convey emotion rather than language, and the result is that audiences reliably understand a character saying nothing intelligible. Kenny Baker sat inside the shell for the walking shots; radio-controlled units handled the rest, and they broke constantly during the Tunisian shoot. The name came from an editing-room shorthand Lucas overheard on a previous film — Reel 2, Dialogue 2 — and he liked the sound enough to keep it. Structurally the droid is the through-line of the entire saga: he appears in every numbered film and, in-universe, witnesses almost all of it.
R2-D2: the details
- First appearance
- Star Wars, May 1977
- Created by
- George Lucas, with concept art by Ralph McQuarrie and effects work by John Stears
- The name
- From editing shorthand for Reel 2, Dialogue 2, which Lucas overheard on an earlier production
- The voice
- Built by Ben Burtt from his own vocalisations processed through an analogue synthesiser, aiming at emotion rather than words
- Two methods
- Kenny Baker sat inside for walking shots; radio-controlled units handled the rest and failed frequently in Tunisia
- In every numbered film
- One of only a small number of characters to appear across the whole saga
- Repeatedly the actual hero
- Carries the plans, opens the doors and repairs the ship — the story usually turns on him rather than the leads
Why R2-D2 endures
The clearest demonstration in mainstream film that a character with no face and no dialogue can carry sustained emotional performance, achieved almost entirely through sound design and movement.
What R2-D2 looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The white cylindrical body with a blue domed head
One of the best object-as-character designs available — a white cylinder with a blue dome, recognisable in pure silhouette and at any size. The blue-and-white pairing is distinctive, and paired designs with C-3PO are a category staple.
A white cylinder with a blue dome — legible in pure silhouette at any size, which very few designs manage. Paired C-3PO designs are a staple. Strong on white, navy and heather grey. Excellent across every size band.
