Who is Rapunzel?
Tangled was the studio's fiftieth animated feature and reportedly one of the most expensive films ever made, and a great deal of that money went into two problems. The first was the hair: seventy feet of it, which had to move like hair rather than rope, and which required software written for this film alone. The second was the look. Glen Keane, who had spent his career in hand-drawn animation, wanted the computer-generated film to resemble a painting — specifically Fragonard's The Swing, all soft light and warm shadow — and the studio built a non-photorealistic rendering approach to get it. The commercial outcome was unexpected: the merchandising settled not on the hair but on the floating lanterns, a single image from one sequence, which now functions as the property's logo.
