Who is Tom Nook?
Tom Nook is the businessman of Animal Crossing: a tanuki, localised in English as a raccoon, who runs the town shop and sells the player a house on credit. The series began on the Nintendo 64 in Japan in 2001 as Dōbutsu no Mori, created by Katsuya Eguchi and Hisashi Nogami, and reached North America on the GameCube in 2002. Paying off Nook's home loan, which grows each time the house is expanded, is one of the game's long-term goals, and the loans carry no interest and no deadline. That gentle arrangement became a long-running internet joke, in which players cast Nook as a ruthless landlord. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released for the Nintendo Switch in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic lockdowns, became one of the best-selling games on the system and brought Nook to a much wider audience. In New Horizons he runs Resident Services on a desert island, while his nephews Timmy and Tommy run Nook's Cranny, the island shop. His striped apron and leaf-shaped Nook Inc. logo are the usual shirt designs, and the debt joke is the adult favourite.
