The Riddler

The Riddler has a compulsion rather than a plan: he cannot commit a crime without telling someone how to stop it, and the character is at his best when writers treat that as an affliction he resents rather than a quirk he enjoys. He exists to be outsmarted, which makes him the only Batman villain whose entire function is to confirm that the detective is a detective — the rest of the rogues test whether Batman can fight or whether he can be provoked.

Who is The Riddler?

The Riddler has a compulsion rather than a plan: he cannot commit a crime without telling someone how to stop it, and the character is at his best when writers treat that as an affliction he resents rather than a quirk he enjoys. He exists to be outsmarted, which makes him the only Batman villain whose entire function is to confirm that the detective is a detective — the rest of the rogues test whether Batman can fight or whether he can be provoked. The character has swung further between registers than almost anyone in the gallery: Frank Gorshin's giggling 1960s version, Jim Carrey's, and most recently a stripped-down conspiracy figure in a green army jacket. The question-mark motif is one of DC's most efficient marks precisely because it is already a piece of punctuation.

Why The Riddler endures

The only Batman antagonist whose purpose is to test detection rather than force, and the owner of one of DC's most efficient marks — a symbol that was already a symbol.

What The Riddler looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: A green suit covered in question marks; a question-mark cane

The question mark is the best kind of character mark — it is already a symbol, so it needs no explanation and reads at any size in any colour. Green on purple or black, and a repeating question-mark pattern works as an all-over print.
