Who is Nightwing?
Nightwing is the model case for how to grow a sidekick up, and the industry has been trying to repeat it for forty years without much success. Dick Grayson had been Robin since 1940; Marv Wolfman and George Pérez gave him a new identity, a new costume and a life outside Gotham, and crucially did not simply promote him to a second Batman. The character that emerged is Batman's temperamental opposite — sociable, warm, funny, and the person the wider DC universe actually likes — which gives him a function no one else in that corner of the publisher performs. The name comes from Kryptonian legend rather than from Gotham, taken from a Superman story, which is a nice detail about who he considers his family.

Why Nightwing endures
The benchmark for retiring a sidekick identity successfully, and one of the few legacy transitions in comics that has never been reversed.
What Nightwing looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: A stylised blue bird spreading across the chest on black
The chest emblem is one of DC's cleanest — a swept bird shape that reads as a single mark rather than a picture, works in one colour at any size, and sits on black. Blue on black is unusual in the line and instantly identifying.
