Who is Star-Lord?
Peter Quill spent nearly forty years as an obscure character in a magazine nobody read, and the 2014 film rebuilt him almost entirely — the comics version has little of the comic incompetence that defines him on screen. What the film added, and what makes it work, is a specific and slightly cruel joke: he was abducted from Earth as a child on the night his mother died, and everything he knows about being cool comes from a mixtape she made him. He is performing an idea of adulthood assembled by a nine-year-old from 1970s pop songs. That is why the character is funny and why the grief lands, and it gave the film a soundtrack that became a commercial phenomenon in its own right.
