Who is Sam?
Sam is a small figure in orange footed pyjamas and a burlap sack mask who appears in every story of Trick 'r Treat and punishes anyone who breaks the traditions of Halloween. Michael Dougherty wrote and directed the anthology film, which was finished in 2007 but, after repeated delays, was released on home video in 2009 rather than in cinemas. It found its audience there and became a cult Halloween favourite, with many viewers watching it every October. Sam had first appeared in Dougherty's animated short Season's Greetings in 1996. In the film he is played by Quinn Lord and never speaks; his rules are simple — hand out treats, respect the dead, leave the jack-o'-lanterns lit, and check your candy. Under the mask his head resembles a pumpkin. The character's design, a child in a homemade costume, is both cute and menacing, which has made it one of the most recognisable horror figures of the 2000s and a regular in Halloween apparel ranges. A comic adaptation followed, and a sequel has long been discussed.
