Hawkeye

Hawkeye is the Avenger with a bow, standing next to a god, a super-soldier and a man in a flying suit of armour, and the best stories are the ones that take that absurdity seriously. Matt Fraction and David Aja's 2012 run is the definitive treatment: it ignores the world-saving almost entirely and follows him on his days off, dealing with his apartment building, his hearing loss and a dog, drawn in a spare graphic style that looked like nothing else on the shelf and won multiple Eisner Awards.

Who is Hawkeye?

Hawkeye is the Avenger with a bow, standing next to a god, a super-soldier and a man in a flying suit of armour, and the best stories are the ones that take that absurdity seriously. Matt Fraction and David Aja's 2012 run is the definitive treatment: it ignores the world-saving almost entirely and follows him on his days off, dealing with his apartment building, his hearing loss and a dog, drawn in a spare graphic style that looked like nothing else on the shelf and won multiple Eisner Awards. The character's deafness — introduced in the comics in the 1980s and reflected in later screen versions with hearing aids and sign language — is one of the more prominent disability depictions in mainstream superhero fiction. He began, as a surprising number of Marvel characters did, as an antagonist.

Why Hawkeye endures

The Avenger used to test what the team looks like from the perspective of someone ordinary, and the subject of one of the most stylistically influential comics runs of the 2010s. His deafness is also among the genre's most sustained disability depictions.

What Hawkeye looks like on a shirt

Signature motif: The bow, the arrow, and the purple-and-black target motif

The target roundel from the Fraction and Aja run is one of the most stylish pieces of design in modern comics apparel — concentric purple circles, no character, no name. Extremely strong as a minimalist print.

The purple concentric target from the Fraction and Aja run is the standout — a minimalist graphic that identifies the character with no figure or text. Purple on black is the signature. Teen and adult sizing.
