Who is Felix the Cat?

Felix the Cat is a black cat with a white face and a huge grin, and in the 1920s he was the world's most famous cartoon character. He first appeared in Feline Follies in 1919, made at Pat Sullivan's studio. Sullivan took the credit, but the animator Otto Messmer did most of the creative work, and Messmer is now widely recognised as Felix's creator. Felix was one of the first cartoon characters to be merchandised on a large scale, and a Felix doll was used as a test image in early television broadcasts in 1928. Sound films hurt his popularity. Joe Oriolo revived him for television in 1958 and gave him the Magic Bag of Tricks, which can become anything he needs.
