Who is Woody Woodpecker?

Woody Woodpecker is a red-crested bird with a machine-gun laugh and no respect for anyone. He first appeared in Knock Knock in 1940, a Walter Lantz cartoon for Universal, and was developed by Lantz and story man Ben Hardaway. Lantz liked to tell a story about a real woodpecker drilling into his roof on his honeymoon as the inspiration. Mel Blanc voiced the early Woody and his laugh; from 1950 Lantz's wife, the actress Grace Stafford, took over the role. Woody headlined Universal's theatrical cartoons until 1972, and The Woody Woodpecker Show from 1957 kept him on television for decades. A live-action film followed in 2017. The red crest and the laugh are the character.
