Sarah Connor is two entirely different characters across two films, and the gap between them is the most complete transformation in action cinema. In 1984 she is a waitress who spends most of the picture being hunted and who wins by improvising; by 1991 she is a hollow-eyed, over-muscled escapee from a psychiatric institution who nobody in the film entirely trusts, including the audience. Linda Hamilton trained for months and the physical change is part of the argument — this is what surviving the first film would actually do to a person. The second film is careful not to present it as an upgrade. She is a better fighter and a considerably worse mother, and the story eventually turns on her being talked out of committing a murder by her own son. Very few blockbusters make competence look that costly.
