Pendleton Ward drew Finn for a seven-minute short that Nickelodeon commissioned and then declined to develop, and Cartoon Network picked it up on the strength of how widely it had been passed around online. The design is close to nothing — a white bean of a body, black dot eyes, a hat with ears — and that emptiness is what let the show put him anywhere. Over ten seasons the series revealed, slowly and mostly in passing, that the candy kingdom stands on the ruins of a nuclear war and that Finn is the last human in it, which recasts every earlier episode without ever announcing itself. Jeremy Shada was twelve when he was cast and grew up in the part, so the voice ages in real time across the run. The hat has never come off for long; his hair, when shown, is extraordinary.
