Adventure Time
BMO
BMO is a living games console — a squat teal box with a screen for a face, a directional pad, two buttons and legs — and the design is an affectionate composite of the hardware a particular generation grew up on, closest to a Game Boy crossed with a Famicom. Niki Yang, a storyboard artist on the series, voices the part in her own Korean-accented English, and the fact that the performer was already inside the production is part of why the character drifts so far from where it started.

Who is BMO?
BMO is a living games console — a squat teal box with a screen for a face, a directional pad, two buttons and legs — and the design is an affectionate composite of the hardware a particular generation grew up on, closest to a Game Boy crossed with a Famicom. Niki Yang, a storyboard artist on the series, voices the part in her own Korean-accented English, and the fact that the performer was already inside the production is part of why the character drifts so far from where it started. The show refers to BMO as he in some episodes and she in others, deliberately and without ever resolving it, which was unusual for a children's cartoon in 2010 and passed almost without comment. A standalone special opened the Distant Lands run in 2020.

Why BMO endures
A children's cartoon character whose gender the show declined to fix, and a design that works because it is a physical object rather than a face.
What BMO looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: Teal console body, screen face, directional pad and buttons
A rectangle with two dots and a curve, plus a d-pad. It is essentially a piece of consumer electronics, which means it prints as a flat object with hard edges — no gradients, no line weight problems, legible from across a room and equally good at pocket scale.
The best print of the three Adventure Time characters — hard-edged flat shapes, no gradients, legible at any scale. Teal on black, charcoal or white. Works across every size band including adult.
