Who is Coraline Jones?
Coraline Jones is an eleven-year-old who moves into an old house, finds a small door, and discovers an Other World where an Other Mother with black buttons for eyes wants her to stay forever. The character comes from Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella, and Henry Selick adapted it in 2009 as the first feature from the Oregon stop-motion studio LAIKA. Coraline was the first stop-motion feature shot in stereoscopic 3D, and the production built every set, puppet and costume by hand, including tiny knitted sweaters. Dakota Fanning voiced Coraline. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and slowly became a Halloween favourite; its fifteenth-anniversary re-release in 2024 was a surprise success in cinemas. The design most people wear is Coraline herself in her yellow raincoat and blue hair, or the unsettling button eyes of the Other Mother. Because the film is both beautiful and frightening, its apparel sits between children's and adult ranges, and it sells strongly in October.
