Who is Peter Venkman?
Venkman is the reason Ghostbusters is a comedy rather than a horror film. The part was written for John Belushi, who died before production, and Bill Murray played it instead — mostly by ignoring the script. A substantial amount of his dialogue is improvised, and the character that emerged is a scientist who does not believe in his own field, is transparently working the situation for his own benefit, and is the only person on screen behaving as an audience member would. That gives the film its footing: three men take the supernatural seriously and one keeps pointing out how ridiculous all of it is. Harold Ramis reportedly wrote much of the technical dialogue precisely so Murray would have something solid to undercut.
