Who is Eleven?
Eleven is a character built almost entirely out of restraint. She barely speaks in the first season — the performance is carried by stillness and a very small vocabulary — and the series trusts that enough to make her its emotional centre without giving her dialogue to explain herself. She is a child raised as a laboratory subject, identified by a tattooed number rather than a name, and the show's most effective sequences are the ones about her learning ordinary things: a name, a friend, a waffle. Stranger Things is a deliberate assemblage of 1980s references, principally Spielberg, Stephen King and John Carpenter, and Eleven is closest to the Spielberg lineage — the strange child who arrives and reorganises a group of suburban children's lives. The shaved head and pink dress from the first season remain the character's defining image.
