Who is Michael Scott?
Michael Scott is an adaptation of a considerably crueller original. Ricky Gervais's David Brent in the British series is largely unredeemed, and the American version's first season followed that closely enough that audiences did not warm to it. What saved the show was a deliberate softening: the writers gave Michael genuine competence at sales, real loneliness, and a capacity for kindness that surfaces without warning, and Steve Carell played the neediness rather than the arrogance. The result is a character whose comedy comes from the gap between how badly he wants to be liked and how comprehensively he undermines it. The mockumentary format is doing a lot of work — the reaction shot to camera, borrowed from the British series, became one of the most widely imitated comic devices of the following two decades.
Michael Scott: the details
- First appearance
- The Office, March 2005
- Adapted from
- Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's British series; developed for American television by Greg Daniels
- Deliberately softened
- The first season followed the harsher British original closely and struggled; the writers added warmth and competence
- The reaction shot
- The glance to camera, inherited from the British series, became one of the most imitated comic devices of the era
- Nearly cancelled
- Renewed after a shortened first season despite weak initial reception
- Streaming afterlife
- Found a far larger audience in syndication and streaming than during its original broadcast
- Left early
- Steve Carell departed after the seventh season, two years before the series ended
Why Michael Scott endures
The central character of a series whose streaming afterlife dwarfed its broadcast reception, and a much-studied case of an adaptation succeeding by diverging from a well-regarded original.
What Michael Scott looks like on a shirt
Signature motif: The World's Best Boss mug and the Dunder Mifflin logo
This character's merchandise is almost entirely typographic — quotes, the mug slogan and the fictional company logo. The Dunder Mifflin wordmark works as a straight corporate-parody graphic and is the strongest single asset.
Almost entirely a typographic category — quote shirts, the mug slogan and the Dunder Mifflin corporate wordmark. The fictional company logo is the strongest single graphic and works as deadpan corporate parody. Strong on white, heather grey and navy.
