Who is The Pink Panther?

The Pink Panther is a tall pink cat who never hurries and almost never speaks. He was drawn for the opening credits of Blake Edwards's 1963 comedy, in which the Pink Panther is actually a diamond, and Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt designed him to move to Henry Mancini's theme. The credits were popular enough to become a series: The Pink Phink, the first theatrical short, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short in 1964. With no dialogue, the character is carried by walk, posture and the saxophone line of the theme, which is why he remains recognisable in a single silhouette. That coolness, rather than any story, is what the apparel sells.
