Who is Professor Moriarty?
Moriarty exists to kill Sherlock Holmes, and almost nothing else. Conan Doyle had grown to resent the character and wanted him gone, so he invented an adversary of equal capacity, walked both men to a waterfall in Switzerland and pushed them off. That is the entire brief. He appears in only two of the sixty stories and is physically present in barely any of it — most of what readers think they know about him is reputation reported second-hand by Holmes. The reason he looms so large in adaptation is that later writers found the idea irresistible: a mirror-image antagonist who is not a criminal so much as an organising principle, sitting at the centre of a web and never touching anything himself. The public reaction to the death was severe enough that Conan Doyle brought Holmes back a decade later.
