Who is Jean-Luc Picard?
Picard is a deliberate correction of Kirk. Where the original captain resolved problems by acting, Picard resolves them by convening a meeting, and the series is unembarrassed about that being the point — several of its best episodes contain no combat at all. Patrick Stewart was a Royal Shakespeare Company actor with no television profile in America and the casting was resisted internally; Roddenberry reportedly took some persuading. The character's most consequential story is his assimilation by the Borg, which the series refuses to treat as an adventure — the following episode is about him going home to his brother's vineyard and falling apart, and the trauma is referenced for years afterwards rather than resolved. That was unusual for episodic television, which normally reset weekly.
