Is a youth XL the same as an adult small?
Short answer
They are close in chest measurement but not the same garment. Youth XL runs roughly 31–33 inches in the chest and adult small about 34–37, but the bigger difference is length and shoulder width — youth cuts are shorter in the body and narrower across the shoulder, so an adult small hangs noticeably longer.
Chest is the measurement people compare, and it is the one where the two sizes overlap most. Length is where they diverge: an adult small is typically two to three inches longer in the body than a youth XL, which changes how the shirt sits entirely.
For a teenager at the top of the youth range, the choice usually comes down to build. Broad and short favours youth XL; tall and slim favours adult small.
There is a practical argument for adult small regardless: licensed designs are produced in far greater variety in adult sizing, and youth ranges frequently carry only the most popular characters.
