Is a youth XL the same as an adult small?
Short answer
No, and not in the direction most people expect. In all four brands we measured, youth XL is as wide across the chest as adult small or wider — a Gildan youth XL is 20 inches flat against adult small’s 18. What youth XL is not is long: it runs 24⅜ to 27 inches in the body where adult small is 28 in every brand. So a youth XL is a short, wide shirt and an adult small is a long, narrower one.
The assumption behind this question is that youth sizes run smaller than adult sizes in every direction, so youth XL must be a slightly smaller adult small. The measurements say otherwise: the two ranges are drafted for different proportions, and they cross over at this point.
Children of 14 to 16 are broad before they are long, so the top of the youth range is cut wide and short. Adult small is drafted for a finished adult frame — narrower relative to its length, and three inches longer at minimum.
This matters most for a teenager between the two. If the complaint about their last shirt was that it was too short, an adult small fixes that and will not be tighter. If the complaint was that it was baggy, youth XL is the narrower option only in Bella+Canvas; in Gildan and Hanes it is two inches wider across, which is four inches the whole way round.

Is a youth XL bigger than an adult small?
Across the chest, usually yes. Gildan and Hanes youth XL are both 20 in flat against 18 in for their adult small. In the body, no: adult small is 28 in long against 24⅜–27 in for youth XL.
What adult size is a youth XL?
There is no clean equivalent. By chest width a Gildan youth XL sits between adult S (18 in) and adult M (20 in), matching M exactly — but it is 2½ in shorter in the body than either.
Will an adult small fit a 13-year-old?
Often, and it is the better choice if their youth XL shirts are riding up. Adult small is longer in the body but no wider than a Gildan or Hanes youth XL, so it does not add bulk.
