Do character T-shirts run small?
Short answer
There is no single answer, because licensed shirts are made by dozens of different manufacturers under licence with no shared standard between them. As a broad pattern, officially licensed tees from established apparel brands run close to standard US sizing, while cheaper unbranded prints more often run small.
The licensing model is the reason. A studio licenses a character to multiple apparel companies, each of which uses its own blanks and its own patterns. Two shirts featuring the same character, bought on the same day, can be cut to measurements that differ by a full size.
The most reliable predictor is not the character but the brand printed on the neck label. Established licensees publish measurements and hold them consistently across a range; sellers working from generic blanks often do neither.
A secondary signal is fabric. Shirts at the light end of the weight range — around 120 to 145 gsm — tend to be cut leaner as well as feeling thinner, so a light shirt running small is common enough to expect.
