Sizing and fit

What size T-shirt fits a 7-year-old?

Short answer

Most 7-year-olds take a US youth small, labelled 6/7, with a garment chest of roughly 24–25 inches. Small is also the most widely stocked children's size in licensed ranges, so it usually offers the widest choice of designs.

Seven is where brand-to-brand variation starts to widen noticeably. Youth medium is labelled 8 by most licensees, but some ranges label it 8/10 and cut it considerably larger, so a medium from one brand can be two inches broader in the chest than a medium from another.

This is also the age at which children start having opinions about fit. A shirt that measures correctly but feels tight at the sleeve or high at the neck tends not to get worn, and neither of those shows up in a size chart.

If you are buying for a birthday or as a gift and cannot measure, small (6/7) is the safer default at this age — slightly loose is wearable, slightly tight is not.
