What size T-shirt fits a 7-year-old?
Short answer
Most 7-year-olds take a US youth small, labelled 6/7. Measured flat that is 15¼ to 17 inches across the chest depending on the brand, and 20½ to 23 inches long. Small is also the most widely stocked children’s size in licensed ranges, so it usually offers the widest choice of designs.
Seven is where brand-to-brand variation starts to widen noticeably. Youth medium is labelled 8 by most licensees, but some ranges label it 8/10 and cut it considerably larger, so a medium from one brand can be two inches broader in the chest than a medium from another.
This is also the age at which children start having opinions about fit. A shirt that measures correctly but feels tight at the sleeve or high at the neck tends not to get worn, and neither of those shows up in a size chart.
If you are buying for a birthday or as a gift and cannot measure, small (6/7) is the safer default at this age — slightly loose is wearable, slightly tight is not.

Is youth S the same as size 7?
Yes. Youth S is normally labelled 6/7, which refers to ages six and seven rather than a chest measurement.
Should I size up for a 7-year-old?
Only if the child is tall. Youth cuts run short in the body before they run tight in the chest, so length is usually the reason to move up to M (8), not width.
