G.I. Joe was a twelve-inch soldier in 1964, and the version most Americans remember is its 1982 reinvention: a team of 3¾-inch figures, each a named specialist with a code name and a file card, fighting a terrorist organisation called Cobra. Hasbro built the relaunch with Marvel Comics, where Larry Hama wrote the series and most of the characters' personalities, and with animated commercials and a television series that followed. It is the clearest example of the 1980s model in which a toy line, a comic and a cartoon were designed to sell one another.
