Why did the print on my T-shirt crack?
Short answer
Heat, almost always. Hot water and tumble drying make the fabric shrink and relax while the ink layer on top does not move with it, and that mismatch fractures the print. Tumble drying adds mechanical flexing that accelerates it. A print washed cold and air dried can outlast the shirt.
The mechanism is worth understanding because it explains every piece of care advice at once. A screen print is a layer of cured ink sitting on the surface of the fabric. Cotton fibres relax and contract with heat and moisture; the ink layer is comparatively rigid. Each hot cycle moves the fabric under a film that cannot follow, and the film eventually fails along the lines where it flexes most.
Tumble drying compounds it twice — once through heat, and again through several thousand flex cycles per load as the garment tumbles. This is why the same shirt survives many more cold washes than hot ones.
Print method changes how it fails rather than whether it does. Screen prints crack along fold lines. Direct-to-garment prints on dark fabric crack in the white underbase beneath the colour, which shows as a greying of the design before any split appears. Heat-transfer vinyl lifts at the corners and peels rather than crazing.
Once cracking has started it cannot be reversed — the damage is mechanical and permanent. It can usually be stopped: wash inside out, cold, on gentle, and never tumble dry again. A print that has begun to craze often stabilises and stays wearable for years if it is never heated again.
