What can you wear for Halloween if you do not want to dress up?

There are two separate reasons people do not want to dress up, and they call for different answers. If the objection is practical — you have to work, drive, cook or supervise children and a costume makes that harder — then anything wearable solves it, and the choice is simply about how visible you want the reference to be. If the objection is social, which is more common, the requirement is to look like you participated without looking like you tried.

For the second case, a gothic or horror character on a plain dark shirt is the most reliable option. It reads as deliberate rather than as a novelty, it does not depend on seasonal colours, and it stays wearable in November. Novelty Halloween shirts with pumpkins and slogans do the opposite: they read as costume, they only work for a fortnight, and they tend to be built cheaply because nobody expects to wear them twice.

Two situations deserve their own thought. At an office, horror imagery can land badly with colleagues who did not opt in, and the safer register is gothic or comedic — the Addams family, a friendly ghost, a classic monster. Around young children the same applies more strongly, and the not-scary end of the catalogue exists for exactly that.
